I would add one more: Using Facebook and other social networking sites as a weapon when you are upset. Untruths and half-truths that used to take days or weeks to make the rounds, spread at the speed of light on the internet. They become the accepted story before the truth can be told. Irreparable damage is done to reputations and to the church.

Right on, I have pastored for over 30 years, and I totally agree.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Randy and Doug for a very timely article. Our church is presently going through a tough time. We are experiencing all 10 of your negative behaviors you listed. I have personally never experienced what we are going through, and am at a loss. I feel like a big meeting should take place to get everyones issues out on the table, it seems like we are trying to sweep it under the rug or hope that it will just go away. Whenever a new pastor comes to an old, established congregation, are factions and splits unavoidable? Is the statement, "that's just small church mentality" a good excuse to write off complaints from the older-aged generation? Could a "grievance policy" help us? What does a "grievance policy" look like?
